The myth of the melting pot in America has been
around for quite a while. I think that we have all the necessary components,
but no willingness. We have a lot of diverse people in America and we have a
lot of cultures, but no unity. There are many different problems with our
society today. The main one, I believe, is racism. And I believe that it is in
every race.
I think that when we set apart
certain areas, like neighborhoods or schools, for a certain race we are further
dividing our country. When we say that certain parts of town are “for” African
Americans or Hispanics or Whites, then that is where we go wrong. If everyone
is so stuck on their culture and with “their people,” then how can we be
unified?
We need to stop dividing races,
and stop talking about “our people” like our race is to whom we belong to
because that is what divides us. The blame of racism is cast on everybody. Not one race is perfect and has never had
someone that was racist towards another race. We need to stop casting blame
onto the other races, besides your own and take responsibility. Another thing
to put a stop to racism is to stop the racist jokes. Even though people say
that they’re all in fun, there is still an underlying current of “I’m better
than you are” in every joke.
